Kroger is selling its way out of its $2.6 billion patent by selling it off as a generic drug.
Kroger’s generic drug, Eli Lilly’s Cialis, will be sold in the U. S. as a generic version of the widely used prescription drug, tadalafil. Both the generics have a few other patents, which have been extended to include the “drug of choice” in the new name.
The drugmaker is launching its generic version of Cialis later this year, and will include a generic equivalent to Viagra, said Lilly’s president, Michael V. Lechleiter, who has extensive experience in both generic drug sales and pharmaceuticals.
“I’ve worked with people all over the country and have seen it all. I’ve got a lot of experience with the generics,” Lechleiter told The Associated Press in an interview. “We’re very aggressive in our approach.”
Cialis and Viagra, which are used to treat erectile dysfunction and high blood pressure, are in a class of drugs called nitrates. They increase blood pressure by relaxing the muscles in the arteries and increasing blood flow to the penis.
